- Early Influence of Temple Lodge, No.33 Members On The City of Duncan -

Temple Lodge, No. 33 members had a major influence on the City of Duncan in the first half of the 20th century. It can be safely said that Temple Lodge, No. 33 members were instrumental in getting the City of Duncan incorporated in 1912.

The first Mayor and City Council of Duncan, elected in 1912, were all members of Temple Lodge, No. 33. Kenneth F. Duncan was Duncan's first Mayor. Seven members of Temple Lodge, No. 33 have served as Mayor of Duncan; other members have served on Duncan City Council.

Four Temple Lodge, No.33 members served as Reeve of North Cowichan between 1899 and 1923. Others were elected to North Cowichan Council.

Five members of Temple Lodge, No.33 served in the B.C. Legislature between 1899 and 1937 . One served in the House of Commons.

There are several landmark commercial buildings in Duncan's downtown core built by, of for, members of Temple Lodge, No. 33.

Members of Temple Lodge, No. 33 started the first local weekly newspaper, the Cowichan Leader, in the first decade of the 20th century. This newspaper is still being published today as the Cowichan News Leader-Pictorial.

Some of the Cowichan Valley's early 20th century business and commercial leaders were also members of Temple Lodge, No. 33, including: Thomas Pitt, Andrew Peterson, Harry Smith, Stanley Gordon, William Powel, Harold Prevost , James Whittome, Hugh George Savage, and others.
