Freemasonry has a long history in the City of Nanaimo, B.C.
Ashlar Lodge, No.3 was formed in 1873 and built the first Masonic Temple in British Columbia. The cornerstone of the province's first Masonic Temple was laid on 15 October 1873 by V.W. Brother J.F. McCreight, P.D.G.M.
The first Masonic Temple was consecrated by the Grand Master on 21 October, 1874, the first such ceremony performed by the Grand Lodge of B.C.
Nanaimo's first Masonic Temple was torn down in 1922 and replaced by the present 3 storey Masonic Temple building in 1923.
