Featured Deceased Member of Temple Lodge No. 33 For August 2017 – Alexander Chalmers Aitken (1868-1923)

Each month Temple Lodge No. 33 features one of our Deceased Brethren as a way of highlighting Masonic heritage and the contributions our members have made to Duncan and the Cowichan Valley.

Our Featured Deceased Member of Temple Lodge No. 33 for August 2017 is Alexander Chalmers Aitken (1868-1923), a farmer who served several terms as Reeve of North Cowichan. Alex Aitken Elementary School is named for him.

Cowichan Valley Shrine Club Presents Certificates of Appreciation to Cowichan Collision and Mark’s Instant Sign Shop

On 26 July 2017, the Cowichan Valley Shrine Club presented Certificates of Appreciation to Cowichan Collision, 5194 Mearns Road, and Mark’s Instant Sign Shop, 750 Jubilee Street, two local businesses which provided their services, free of charge, for the Cowichan Valley Shrine Club‘s antique fire truck, which is used in Gizeh Shrine fund raising for Shriners Hospital For Children.

Cowichan Collision painted the fire truck while Mark’s Instant Sign Shop provided the new decals on the fire truck.

Featured Deceased Vancouver Island Freemason for July 2017 – Edgar Crow Baker (1845-1920)

As part of our Vancouver Island Masonic History Project we have started a monthly feature highlighting a deceased Vancouver Island Freemason who has played a role in Vancouver Island history.

This is our fourth such post. Our Featured Deceased Vancouver Island Freemason for July 2017 is Edgar Crow Baker, (1845-1920) Past Grand Master of B.C. Among his many other accomplishments he set up the first telephone service in Victoria in partnership with Robert Burns McMicking, our Featured Deceased Vancouver Island Freemason for June 2017.

Our Featured Deceased Brother for July 2017 is George Henry Savage (1887-1959), who was Worshipful Master of Temple Lodge No. 33 in 1923 and served as Mayor of Duncan between 1943-1946.

James Grieg is buried in St. Peter’s Quamichan Anglican Cemetery.

The Featured Deceased member of Temple Lodge No. 33 for May 2017 is Ormond Towers Smythe (1882-1948), one of the ten Freemasons who have served as Mayor of Duncan.

Featured Deceased Vancouver Island Freemason For April 2017 – Charles Hayward (1839-1919)

As part of our Vancouver Island Masonic History Project we are starting a monthly feature highlighting a deceased Vancouver Island Freemason who has played a role in Vancouver Island history.

This is our first such post. Our first Featured Deceased Vancouver Island Freemason and our Featured Deceased Vancouver Island Freemason for April 2017 is Charles Hayward (1839-1919), a member of Vancouver & Quadra Lodge No. 2 and a former Mayor of Victoria.

Charles Hayward‘s term as Mayor of Victoria saw the start of the Inner Harbour Causeway project and negotiations for the construction of the Empress Hotel. Charles Hayward‘s home at 1003 Vancouver Street in Victoria is listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places.
