BUILDINGS ASSOCIATED WITH TEMPLE LODGE, No.33 MEMBERS
DOWNTOWN DUNCAN, B.C.
DUNCAN GARAGE, DUNCAN STREET
The Duncan Garage was started as a family business by the members of the Corfield family, particularly John Frederick Corfield and Norman T. Corfield, both of whom were members of Temple Lodge, No.33.
The historical plaque shown on Fig.3 can be seen on the south exterior wall of the Duncan Garage building. It reads:
"HISTORIC SITE 1912 - the DUNCAN GARAGE
In 1911 Norman Corfield and his team of mechanics drove the first car over the Malahat, opening up vehicle traffic to the City of Duncan and the Cowichan Valley.
He then proceeded to build "the most complete up to date, fireproof garage on Vancouver Island" - quoted from Canadian Motorist Magazine May 1913 issue.
Many more firsts for the Duncan Garage include:
sold the first fire truck to the City of Duncan
Designed the first Ford Station Wagon
Invented the Automobile air lift
After 65 years the Duncan Garage set a provincial record for the longest running business in the same location.
90 Years later, the Duncan Garage was completely restored and designated a heritage building."
