DR. WATSON DYKES HORSE BARN
163 Kenneth Street, Duncan, B.C.
Dr. Watson Dykes (died 1952, aged 74) was a physician who moved to Duncan from Nanaimo in 1904. Dr. Dykes had been a member of Ashlar Lodge, No.3 in Nanaimo and affiliated with Temple Lodge, No.33 in 1904. He was Worshipful Master of Temple Lodge, No.33 in 1920.
Dr. Watson Dykes was apparently the last physician in the area to do house calls in a horse and buggy. His obituary in the local Cowichan Leader newspaper in 1952 says that Dr. Dykes "was one of the old school of country doctors. At one time he was the only medical man in this whole district....He had one of the first cars here, supplanting his old [horse and] buggy...."
This barn was where Dr. Dykes kept his horses and buggy in which he made his medical rounds.
Dr. Dykes' horse barn stands behind 163 Kenneth Street (currently the Sheer Essentials store). It can also be seen from the parking lot of the Telus facility on Ingram Street (see Fig.4 below).
Figure 3 shows front of the building at 163 Kenneth Street (currently occupied by Sheer Essentials). Dr. Dykes' horse barn is visible in Figure 3 beind the store at 163 Kenneth Street.
